Annie Mitchell is a retired Supervising Crime Analyst and Training Coordinator from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) after forty-three years of service. She worked as a Sheriff’s Dispatcher for over ten years and was promoted to the position of crime analyst in 1987. Annie was a crime and intelligence analyst with various analytical assignments, including patrol, intelligence bureau, homicide, and a federal drug task force.
As a Supervising Crime Analyst, Annie was responsible for developing and managing the current centralized crime analysis unit. At any given time, she supervised between twelve to twenty-six crime analysts at assignments throughout Los Angeles County. These included patrol stations, the Parole Compliance Team, Homeless Task Force, Special Victims Bureau, COPS Bureau, Operation Safe Streets (gang detail), Homicide, Arson/Explosives, the Jail Investigations Unit, and CommunityCollege Bureau. Annie developed the LASD Crime Analysis Training Program and was responsible for hiring and training new crime analysts. In 2015, Annie was awarded the LASD Distinguished Service Award for her contribution and continuation of the program’s development. She also was assigned to develop best practices, processes, and procedures for the LASD Department Operations Center which is currently providing real-time tactical analysis for deputies and detectives in the field.
Currently, Annie is a provider and crime analysis subject matter expert (SME) for the Bureau ofJustice Assistance (BJA), the National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC), the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR), and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center (Cri-Tac). She provides crime analysis training and assessments to agencies participating in the National Public Safety Partnerships (PSP) program, which seeks to reduce gun violence within their respective communities.
She is a certified California Advanced POST instructor providing training for sworn personnel with regards to the management, supervision and utlization of their agency's crime analysis unit. Annie developed and is an instructor for the POST-certified “Crime and Intelligence Analysis-Level I” course facilitated through the Government Training Agency (GTA).
Annie has been the Vice President of Administration of the International Association of Crime
Analysts (IACA) since 2017 and has held several board positions, including President for three terms within the Southern California Crime & Intelligence Analysts Association (SCCIAA). She also was awarded the SCCIAA “Analyst of the Year Award” in 2015.
Annie continues to remain passionate about the profession, having watched it evolve and grow exponentially from 1987 to present. She continues to promote, mentor, train and consult in the field of crime and intelligence analysis.
